Product Acceptance

Exis Inc wants to ensure the quality of products on the Exchange, and as such we have stringent quality moderation controls in place. We have developed some guidelines to help you, as the seller, position your product for maximum sales. In addition, we have these guidelines to assure that our clients are purchasing quality products at an affordable price. You can improve the likelihood of acceptance by considering the following suggestions.

Content:
As a rule, Exis will not accept material of a pornographic nature. Tasteful nudity is acceptable, as the human body is a staple in art. We do not accept racially charged material that includes racial slurs or blatant attacks on a given group. Subjects that are favorable to sale on the exchange include vehicles, humans, aliens, toys, spacecraft, environments, sets, tools, animals, plant life, clothing, interface design, icons , creatures, armor, sports, electronics, watercraft, anatomy, characters, and architecture.
In addition, we ask that smaller assets be grouped into “packs” whenever possible. A single model of a chair is not overly interesting. The caveat to this suggestion is that if you have several single items for sale, and offer a combined pack of all items as well, this is acceptable and encouraged.

Presentation:
Presentation of your products is one of the key sales features. We ask that files you submit are “clean” in several ways. First and foremost, any files with viruses are automatically rejected. Each file is scanned to ensure that we are not infecting our clients and we ask that you pre-scan all of your files before sending them to us. Please update your virus scanner regularly.
Secondly, we ask that your files maintain a sense of decorum. It’s important that your view ports are reset, and that defaults are properly calibrated. Scale is typically a big problem with external files, but an unavoidable issue since people work in various scale properties. We do not ask for any particular scale resolution. If you are using third party plug-ins, please state in the file description that you have used said plug-ins. When it is permissible by law, and previous license agreements, you may wish to include the plugin with your media. Please note that if you include someone else plugin without express permission from the author, or include plug-ins that are for sale elsewhere, we will not accept the file. It’s important that files on the Exis Exchange be free of IP encumbrances, in order to provide your customers with the best service possible. Furthermore, it may be useful to include a source file that is free of cameras, lights, and any additional scene elements. Please check your texture paths to make sure they are not absolute, and that they do not reveal any directory structure you would rather keep private. Our recommendation for a file structure is as follows:

If you have exported animations, you may consider an Export folder in the animations folder. The point is, it may be helpful to put the source textures in the same directory as the source models/media. This will help most 3d applications auto-detect and use the textures, even if the path is not completely aligned.
When creating the product page for your media, the first image is the product’s “main image” and will appear as the product image in several places. This includes situations where a search is performed, on your “my products” listing, and anywhere a graphical representation of your product is displayed by the exchange. For this reason, it may be beneficial to create a main product image that shows your media in the best possible light.
We encourage you to write as much about the product as possible in the description. Give information on the tools you used, the process, the background, and any technical information you find useful. Please note that the description portion is a very effective place to communicate the intent and appeal of the media you have for sale. It benefits you and the customer when a meaningful description is written.
When uploading images of your media, we encourage you to upload 12 images, to correspond with the number of available slots. The more images you have of a given model or media, the better a customer can judge its quality and their desire to purchase it. Having only 1 picture or hiding flaws is an unacceptable practice on the exchange, as we moderate files anyway. If a flaw is found and the images have been created in such a way as to hide the flow, the file will be rejected.
It is also very beneficial to you as the vendor to includes an image showing the wire frame of a given object or media. This will often times give users a great tool to determine their need, and it could very well be the critical piece of information that helps sell your product. We highly encourage the practice of showing wire frames and other source media.

Pricing:
The price of a model or media set is a very important factor in its salability. It’s important for the vendor to find the “right price” for their goods, in order to improve sales. The critical factor is to provide value to a customer. A model on saled for $199.99 may generate 2 sales a in a given month, resulting in roughly $400.00. But the same product for sale at $39.99 may sell 15 units in a given month, resulting in nearly $600.00. This is a valuable lesson with respect to product pricing. It’s typically better to have a lower price and sell many more units, than to have a high price and sell far fewer units. If the price for the mode is excessive, we may reject it. Typically the price does not play a role in our acceptance of the file, but a 3d chair for $1000 is typically considered bad value for a customer (granted it may be a nice chair). The point is, this is highly subjective and we tend to side with your decision on this, but we may deny products with outrageous price points.

Quality:
The quality of a given model is of the utmost importance for the Exchange. Models that have messy and wasteful UV mapping, excessively low polygon counts, or lack of attention to detail are not acceptable. Models with overly low resolution textures or muddy textures are not acceptable. We ask that files include source, and that the source is easily useable and understandable.

If your model is intended for the handheld market, such as the DS, or PSP, and is built to those specifications, please include a note about this in your product description. Please note that we do not relax our quality requirements simply because the asset’s polygon and texture resolution is lower on these systems.

Asset Completion:
The Exis Exchange only accepts assets that are in a complete state. For game models, this means that the asset is modeled, UV mapped, and textured. Models without UVmapping and textures meant for games will not be accepted.

If your product is animation only, please note this fact in the product description.

High polygon assets from packages such as Zbrush or Mudbox need not have UV mapping or textures. These assets can be submitted as mesh only, including source. Clients who wish to use these assets for normal mapping and other media can accept the responsibility of texture creation themselves.

Lack of Support:
Although this is a very relaxed suggestion, product’s that have support for multiple packages are highly coveted. Lack of exports for other packages will hurt sales. We suggest that you export the model into as many formats as you can, and include these with the final product package. If you wish to provide extra files to make a product “engine ready” for various game engines, this is a very big plus for product acceptance.

Offensive material:
The Exchange simply does not accept assets of a pornographic or racially charged nature. We will automatically deny acceptance of a file that focuses on degrading individuals or groups. To a much lesser degree, if your product contains curse words, or derogatory text, we may reject it on this basis. This said, tasteful nude models are acceptable for the Exchange.

Asset Cleanliness:
If a file is unreadable, uses excessive external plug-ins, or is otherwise unusable, we cannot accept it on the Exchange. Texture files with dozens or hundreds of layers are unacceptable. We ask that you merge layers properly, yet provide enough layers to give your customers the ability to modify the texture easily.

Copyright infringement:
Assets that infringe copyrights, trademarks, or the legal rights of others will not be accepted. If you wish to create assets based on the IP of others, it is best to get their permission in writing before doing so. That said, assets that are similar to the IP of others is acceptable, as we do not ask you to censor your creativity. We simply ask that you be aware of this, and not intentionally infringe the rights of your fellow artists, or the graphical community.

Product Insalability:
If the asset you’ve submitted is something outright ridiculous, like a sphere, it won’t be accepted. A single polygon, a model of animal genitalia, mish mashed polygons, or something resulting from a night of excessive dinking will likely not be accepted. We suggest that smaller “prop” items be merged into a “pack” and sold as a group.

Strategy:
The exchange is a place that 3d artists and media producers of various kinds can create a steady and meaningful revenue stream for themselves. The best strategy to create a sustainable revenue system is to create many products for sale. The more products you have available, the larger your potential audience. You may consider what aspects of multimedia design lend themselves to outsourced media, and concentrate on that. For example, generic props using the latest methodologies may be an excellent choice for an artist who wishes to create an appealing product to a wide audience.
In addition, the ExTag is a great way to promote your goods and services. It is an HTML/UBB snippet that will create a small banner for your product. It’s useful for message boards and websites where you wish to promote your goods. Essentially the ExTag is a pre-made advertisement for your goods, and we hope you’ll take advantage of it. The ExTag code can be found on the bottom of your product page once it goes live.
Keep in mind that everyone is looking for something different, and your model and style may fit exactly into their plans. Provide your audience with high quality products and reasonable prices, and you can position yourself to profit from your talents.

Thank you for taking the time to read this material, and enjoy the Exis Exchange. We look forward to seeing all of your spectacular work.
